Hello, my name is Hanyu Huang. I am an IT professional with experience in the social sciences as well as information technology.
As a technologist, I am curious about the future direction of technology and where society is evolving. Technologies from Artificial Intelligence to personal assistant devices are revolutionizing how people live, work, and view the world. Everyone, from the movers and shakers such as corporate CEOs and politicians, down to the average everyday person, must consider how technology is being used and what are their visions of how technology will influence their lives.
Once, men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.”
Frank Herbert
Outside my work, I am interested in video games, sci-fi, fantasy and history.
I have been a video gamer since the days of the original Red Alert and Age of Empires games from the 1990s and 2000s. Since then, I have enjoyed games from many genres. My experience with the Total War series of games, as well as games such as the Elder Scrolls and Horizon Zero Dawn, are games that I love and treasure.
It is my belief everyone should read narratives sometime in their life. Science fiction and fantasy allow authors to explore themes that everyone encounter, and magnify these themes in imaginary settings that allow them to shine all the brighter. Furthermore, sci-fi and fantasy genres that require extensive world-building and background details from their creators. From the extensive history of Middle Earth, to the intricate political system of Dune, sci-fi and fantasy are goldmines for lore enthusiasts and world builders to create and weave to amaze but also introspect.
My interest in history is closely tied to my interest in stories and my curiosity in finding the why and the how behind many events. In history, the gripping stories of the larger-than-life figures are often tempered by the more mundane factors and the societies in which these figures emerged. I believe when analyzing any event, we must balance every individuals’ agency with the material and social constraints these individuals operate in.
History does not repeat itself, but it often rhymes”
